That reliance on this clever tool has already led to the development of various forms of ergonomic keyboards: keyboards that decrease the likelihood of developing wrist or hand related injuries, such as RSI.
However, Matt Adereth has been working on a far more original model with the help of 3D printing: the Dactyl keyboard, that actually consists of two completely separate, curved keyboard segments. It sounds strange and it looks strange, but a Dactyl keyboard might actually be part of the future. Builder Matt Adereth, however, sees it as a fantastic solution to optimize keyboard use. Based in Oakland, he is actually a tool and infrastructure builder at Two Sigma, and is also a keyboard-mad collector.
But even for DIY keyboards, the Dactyl keyboard is truly impressive. To add more fuel to the fire and an extra level of complexity, the Dactyl Keyboard is also a mechanical keyboard.

Instead, we are all using less expensive, spill-proof keyboards packed with rubber membranes that do all the work for us. Many users, given the opportunity, prefer the satisfying feeling of working with a mechanical keyboard — which has already led to a community of DIY makers, among which Matt Adereth can also be found.
As he explains on redditThe Dactyl Keyboard is a mechanical design that has taken a bit of inspiration from other builds, including from the commercial Kinesis Advantage. I've got the thumb cluster a little closer and angled and I think it makes it nicer. The only problem right now is the lack of palm rest, which some ergonomics folks think is actually a good thing.
Debugging it is pretty difficult and requires you to actually understand how it's all wired up. You can wire it by hand, but the case is an incredibly tight fit, so I highly recommend the flexible PCB approach. Right now, you have to etch the PCBs yourself, which is itself an involved process.
These can be etched onto Pyralux PCB sheets, which you will need to cut up to fit the frame. At least 3D printing is easier. Matt himself designed the casing using a Makerbot 3D printer, and you could 3D print it all on a similar machine, though the final version visible above was made through 3D printing company.
Quite a lot of filament will be necessary. Of course, this will also greatly increase the costs involved. You could print it yourself, but it's a large print and requires a fair amount of accuracy.
But then you could be the proud owner of one of the most impressive keyboards in the world, and that means a lot too. Maybe you also like:. We are now seven years old and have around 1. Top Websites. This is a fork of the Dactyla parameterized, split-hand, concave, columnar, ergonomic keyboard. The main change is that the thumb cluster was adapted from the ManuForm keyboard geekhack. The walls were changed to just drop to the floor.
The keyboard is paramaterized to allow adjusting the following:. The default has a bit more tenting than the Dactyl. See the following model files for configurations that may be most common:.
When a model is generated, it also generates a. When laser cut, some of the inside cuts will need to be removed. This model can be tricky to print.
This can cause the printer to think its head is jammed. Even if it successfully prints, warping can cause problems. On one print, the RJ-9 holder was squished, so I had to cut down my connector to fit. I wired one half using the traditional approach of using the legs of a diode to form the row connections. I'm not great at soldering, so this was challenging for me. For this side, I used magnet wire to wire columns. That worked okay.
The magnet wire is small enough, it wants to move around, and it's hard to tell if you have a good connection. For another half, I used stripboard for the row connections. This allowed me to presolder all of the diodes.
Then, I hot-glued this in place and finished the soldering of the other diode ends.GitHub is home to over 40 million developers working together to host and review code, manage projects, and build software together. The electronic piano may feel more like keys pressing into a single piece of electronic hardware.
Computer keyboards are similar. Most computer keyboards come with membrane keys which are like electronic piano keys. They have a one-piece design where keys press down onto a membrane and make electrical connections which trigger that a key was pressed. But, now that I have started to use mechanical keyboards, I am getting spoiled with the tactile feel of typing which can probably be best described as the difference between playing on a grand piano versus playing on an outstanding electronic piano.

I thought I had a ton of keyboards. The red line is the popularity of mechanical keyboard searches over ergonomic keyboard searches. However, this is an ergonomics review site and the vast majority of the mechanical keyboards you find for sale are not really ergonomic.
Going through the mechanical keyboards on Amazon, the first five pages showed only non-ergonomic mechanical keyboards. I gave up after page 5 and assumed no one would find an ergonomic mechanical keyboard by just searching for mechanical models.
You can get ergonomic mechanical keyboards though! This guide is ordered alphabetically by the manufacturer so take some time to weave through all of the models below. The first section is for keyboards you can buy right now and the second section is for others that may or may not be available for a DIY build or purchase including rare keyboards that sometimes pop up on eBay.
For now, here are the models you can by right now…. Read our full review of the Ultimate Hacking Keyboard. The keys are the same size as a normal keyboard but uses layers and additional keys to allow for things like escape, F-keys, or navigation keys. You can order the UHK in one of variations. Color options also include black, dark red, orange, navy blue, and for those that can keep it clean white.
The price tag is high, there is an adjustment period, and some elements of the design may annoy you. However, if it helps your typing-related pain, those other things are petty by comparison. Also, after a while, you will most likely learn to work around the annoying features of the keyboard and begin to enjoy some of its more subtle efficiency benefits.
The Advantage2 adds more features some of which are summarized below:. What it does have is a small footprint, which in some situations can be very relevant to ergonomics. This is the first custom mechanical keyboard I built for others. Cherry MX, Zealios and other Gateron switches can also be used.
If you use Kailh, Outemu, or other switches, remove the sidenubs from the 3D Model, and use hot glues. I removed the legs of the two middle switches, so that we can keep the overall keyboard height low.
In the left photo, a hook or a loop is formed around the connection to the switch. This makes the connection between the diodes and the switches stronger physically. In the right photo, the same idea applies to the connections between the wire matrix and the diodes. The pro micro is connected to the TRRS jack.
